Level Design Toolkit

Me and a fellow student, Mathias Larsen, created a toolkit for level designers in Unreal Engine intended to speed up the workflow of level designers mainly for the gym/metrics, and the block-out phase of the level design process.

We build a set of tools that help users measure distances along a line and spline, measure the radius of a circle, figure out the sizes of door frames and hallways, and measure and track cover. These tools are easy to use and don't require any technical knowledge from the user.

The block-out tools for the project are aimed at streamlining the process by reducing the switching of tools. In tools like cube-grid or by scaling meshes the user has to continuously switch between states in the engine. The block-out tools for boxes, triangles, and cylinders can all be adjusted in shape and size while staying in the "transform and select" mode in Unreal's editor.

Lastly this toolkit includes some features to help level designers communicate to each other, the team, or the environemnt artists. The arrow tool can help level designers give direction of the golden path, help indicate what direction the player is supposed to be facing or point out important landmarks. The notes tool does something similar but allows the user to add a detailed description of what they are highlighting, this tool can also be used to track bugs and issues in the level.

The tool was released on the Unreal Marketplace in January of 2024.
